Level 1 market data provides real-time pricing information such as the best bid price, best ask price, and the most recent traded price. When a user has an active Level 1 market data subscription through Tradovate, the price charts are not delayed. Any chart delay typically occurs only when a required market data subscription is missing or inactive, not because the user is on Level 1 instead of Level 2.
Level 2 market data does not reduce chart delay or make charts more “real-time” compared to Level 1. Instead, Level 2 data provides additional depth by showing the full order book, including multiple bid and ask levels with available quantities at each price. This data is primarily used by traders who rely on order flow analysis or Depth of Market (DOM) for execution decisions.
In summary, Level 2 market data is not required to avoid delayed charts. It is an optional enhancement for traders who want deeper visibility into market liquidity, while Level 1 market data is sufficient for real-time charts and standard trading activity when properly subscribed and active.
